Seattle launches teacher-residency training model

The Seattle Public Schools system is in the first year of the Seattle Teacher Residency in which 25 trainee teachers are working in district elementary schools and are mentored by 25 senior teachers -- a teacher-training model endorsed by Ronald Thorpe, president of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. "Teaching -- like many other professions -- is far too complex to rely on the undergraduate years alone to produce a teacher who can do well walking into a classroom with only a bachelor's degree and a license to teach," Thorpe said. "We need a full-blown, universal residency model."
