Study examines "opportunity costs" of futile ICU care

ICU patients who get futile care at the end of life may be treated at the expense of other patients who could receive more benefit from ICU care, University of California, Los Angeles, researchers reported at the CHEST meeting. The study linked futile care to what researchers called "opportunity costs" that could harm other patients, such as delayed admissions from the emergency department and delays in transfers from other hospitals.
