New lightweight pier model tested for Navy

A new type of pier is being tested in San Diego as a long-term solution for the berthing needs of the U.S. Navy. The 50-foot by 100-foot pier, developed by Berger/Abam Engineers of Federal Way, Wash., is made of precast, lightweight concrete and though it requires minimal piles, the pier can support 140-ton mobile cranes.
