Santa Monica, Calif., could get funding for new bridge at pier

The city of Santa Monica, Calif., is hoping to get $8 million in federal funding to replace a concrete bridge at its famous pier. The 60-year-old span is narrow for pedestrians and cars; a new bridge would be wider for both and would stand up better to earthquakes. If funding is approved, construction could start in 2013.
