Aging population among challenges facing China's health care system

China's health care system faces several difficulties, including a shortage of doctors and an aging population, writes C. Cindy Fan, a professor of geography and an associate dean at the University of California, Los Angeles. "As the Chinese age, their demand for care of degenerative diseases such as heart disease and diabetes -- due in part to rising consumption -- will increase relative to basic health care," Fan writes. Health care difficulties are especially acute among rural Chinese, Fan notes.
