CMS raises Medicare, Medicaid rates for family physicians

Final rules issued by the CMS will increase Medicare rates for family physicians 7% in 2013 and raise Medicaid rates closer to Medicare payments through 2014. Much of the Medicare payment increase will come from additional payments for patient care coordination following a hospital or skilled nursing facility discharge. AAFP president Jeffrey Cain, M.D., said states should quickly implement the Medicaid rule because it "will do much to enable physicians to care for Medicaid patients."
