Dog's red eye should be evaluated by a veterinarian

When a dog's eye appears red, it may be a sign of a serious condition, writes veterinarian Alison Koodrich. Responding to a reader question, Dr. Koodrich says Visine is not a recommended treatment because it is intended for human use and is not approved for dogs. Dr. Koodrich explains the possible causes of a red eye in dogs, including a scratched cornea, conjunctivitis, dry eye and glaucoma. It's important to have a veterinarian evaluate a pet's red eye immediately because glaucoma can lead to vision loss if not promptly treated, Dr. Koodrich adds.
