Group reverses stance on ipecac

Parents have long kept a bottle of ipecac handy to induce vomiting if their children swallowed toxic substances, but the American Academy of Pediatrics is strongly recommending that parents call poison control centers instead of using the syrup, given findings that ipecac can cause prolonged vomiting and severe lethargy. The American Association of Poison Control Centers also found using ipecac did not improve outcomes, and is planning its own new set of ipecac guidelines.
