Voting is a good thing, right? But participatory democracy can have a negative impact on your organization's productivity, for one day at least. "If too many employees want to take time off work, the employer has the right to draw the line," says James J. McDonald, a managing partner with Fisher & Phillips, a labor law firm. State laws do apply in some cases, but "For most employers, common sense will end up determining how to manage these requests."
