Majority of U.S. consumers pay state sales tax on Amazon purchases

Starting Nov. 1, the majority of U.S. consumers, or an estimated 163 million people in 16 states, began paying sales taxes on purchases made through Amazon. The online retailer's position on sales taxes is complex; it supports a national law that would require e-commerce vendors to collect sales tax for online purchases, but the company continues to fight for delays in the enactment of such policies in certain states.
