Voluntary COOL may benefit from Daschle's defeat

Opponents of a mandatory country-of-origin labeling law, part of which is already in effect for the seafood industry, say the defeat of Sen. Tom Daschle, D-S.D., may increase the chances of replacing the law with a voluntary program. The Food Marketing Institute's president and CEO, Tim Hammonds, called Daschle "the most powerful opponent of voluntary COOL," adding his defeat would likely help the effort to advance legislation implementing it.
