Airlines differ on impact of new runway at O'Hare

A major chokepoint in the U.S. air traffic system will get some relief this month when Chicago O'Hare opens its first new runway since 1971. "O'Hare is our largest hub, and we maintain that with the new runway online, we will see a significant improvement in operational performance," says a spokeswoman for United Airlines. But an official at American Airlines counters that reliability won't see much improvement because the new runway comes just as the airport's four-year-old flight caps are set to expire.
