The Treasury Department's five-person committee that is in charge of the $700 billion rescue program has been thrust into the unique position of making virtually-life-and death decisions for the nation's financial institutions. The officials, who usually tout free-market principles, are now in unfamiliar territory as they make fateful decisions on a daily basis.
