Delirium is a serious problem for elderly in ICU

Hospital delirium is a common, but dangerous and costly problem for elderly patients and is especially common for ICU patients on ventilation. Dr. E. Wesley Ely of Vanderbilt University School of Medicine says the problem is "grossly underrecognized," especially in the ICU where most patients cannot speak. Medical schools are training new physicians about the dangers of delirium and how to differentiate it from dementia.
