European oil group says COOL regulation would be prohibitively complicated

Implementation of a European Union proposal to require country-of-origin labeling for vegetable oils would be "extremely complicated" due to manufacturers' use of multiple sources of the same type of oil, said Nathalie Lecocq of FEDIOL, which represents the European vegetable oil and proteinmeal industry. A draft proposal would require the labeling as part of the EU's Food Information for Consumers regulation, set to take effect in December 2014. The regulation would also require food manufacturers to disclose the type of vegetable oil used in their products rather than use the generic term "vegetable oil."
