Eurozone banks' asset total highlights ECB challenge

At the end of last year, banks in the eurozone held assets worth €29.5 trillion, three times the size of the bloc's economy, according to European Central Bank data. The number underscores the ECB's challenge in assessing banks' balance sheets. The ECB says banks in Germany, Cyprus and Belgium probably should raise their leverage ratios because they are among the most leveraged in the region.
