FDA enlists private-sector help as food imports rise

Food imports increased by more than $3 billion in the first eight months of 2013, and as imports climb, so does the FDA's workload for food-safety inspections. The Food Safety Modernization Act has expanded the FDA's toolbox for completing such inspections, including partnerships with accredited private-sector laboratories and third-party auditors.
