Manufacturing remains the vital core of U.S. economy

Manufacturing may be a shrinking sector of the U.S. economy, but its importance cannot be overstated, writes Thomas Kurfess, ASME Fellow. He says the country leads the world producing the most "disruptive technologies." And manufacturing generates $1.48 for every dollar invested -- more than any other sector -- and accounted for 86% of all U.S. exports in 2010, he adds.
