Weight loss, fewer processed foods may lower kidney risks

A Johns Hopkins University study of about 500 overweight or obese adults who participated in a healthy-lifestyle program found that reducing belly fat and eating less processed food containing phosphorus may reduce the risk of kidney disease. Dr. Joseph Vassalotti of the National Kidney Foundation said phosphorus can be found in foods such as dark colas, cereal, dairy products, deli meats, nut butters and pudding. The study was published in the American Journal of Kidney Diseases.
