While 3D echocardiography to help image and repair mitral valve problems is gaining widespread use, Dr. Patrick McCarthy of Northwestern University cautions against putting too much stock in claims the modality will allow less experienced surgeons to tackle mitral valve repair. McCarthy argues the most important tool in surgery is an expert surgeon and says the 3D technology, which he uses in practice, should augment other planning tools including 2D imaging.
