It's official: Google goes mobile

Google announced today that it would jump into the smartphone market with a free, open-source operating system that will support advertising and third-party applications. Motorola, Samsung, HTC and LG Electronics will market phones that run the Google operating system, while carriers T-Mobile and Sprint Nextel are among those that will allow Google-based phones to operate over their wireless networks in the U.S.
