GAO says Interior Department dismissed oil opportunities

A Government Accountability Office report issued Tuesday says the Interior Department has allowed the vast majority of oil and gas leases in U.S. waters and on federal land to expire without being drilled. While one-third of 2007's domestic oil production came from public lands, that amount could be doubled if energy companies produced on the 68 million acres of U.S. land they have leased, the report said. President-elect Barack Obama has espoused a "use it or lose it" drilling policy.
