Study: New antibiotic combats malaria parasite

Researchers found that a new class of antibiotics called small molecule defensin-mimetic compounds can destroy the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum without harming human red blood cells. The compound, discovered by biopharmaceutical firm PolyMedix, irreversibly kills the parasite after a 10-hour treatment, the study's lead author said.
