When hiring budgets get tight, many employers automatically narrow their searches to local candidates, but that can be a costly mistake, says blogger David Dalka, who believes there is value in recruiting from a geographically diverse talent pool. He offers tips on how to cast a wider net without spending your entire recruiting budget on plane tickets and moving services, including actively seeking out renters and wooing retiring service members. "Over 100,000 service members separate from active military duty [i.e., not National Guard or Reserve duty] each year and it's a little-known fact that each and every one of them is entitled to one free move anywhere in the United States," author Lisa Rosser says.
