Prize competitions could spur new energy technologies

Hoping to encourage energy- and climate-related innovation, the federal government and private sector are using prize competitions long associated with space technologies. The Energy Department has announced a $10 million prize for a longer-lasting light bulb that could replace 60-watt bulbs. Virgin Group's chairman, meanwhile, has announced a $25 million reward for carbon-sequestration technology.
