Doctors who are not trained in plastic surgery have begun offering cosmetic procedures after little more than a weekend workshop, and patients often have difficulty distinguishing among specialties, experts say. Plastic surgeons also should inform patients about what to expect, including pain, says American Society of Plastic Surgeons President Robert Murphy Jr. In addition, patients should beware of bargains, investigate long-term effects and understand that results might not last.
