Smartphones boasting bigger touchscreens, those five inches or larger, are increasing in global popularity, according to a new Canalys report that reveals the so-called "phablets" accounted for 22% of global smartphone shipments in the third quarter. Smartphone shipments jumped 44%, to more than 250 billion units, compared to a year ago. Samsung Electronics and Apple earned 34% and 15% shares of the market followed by Huawei Technologies, Lenovo and LG Electronics. Android and Apple's iOS operating systems saw little changes from the second quarter, but Microsoft landed a 4% share of the market and almost doubled the number of shipments from last year.
