Because owners control a pet's food and exercise plan, it's the willpower of the owner that's tested when a pet needs to lose weight, writes veterinarian Estelle Ward. Owners should feed a consistent, relatively bland diet and use bananas, apples and carrots as dog snacks in place of higher-calorie specialty treats, Dr. Ward recommends. Start all pet weight-loss efforts with a visit to the veterinarian, she adds, and be sure to include regular exercise in your dog's everyday routine.
