IRS tweaks focus for small-business audits, commissioner says

The Internal Revenue Service's audit programs for small businesses is delving into areas the IRS hasn't looked into for decades, said Faris Fink, an IRS commissioner representing the Small Business/Self-Employed Division, at an AICPA tax conference. For example, data collected from the IRS' National Research Program is improving audit selection criteria and prompting the agency to look at such issues as fuel-tax-reporting compliance.
