New device holds promise of more effective brain stimulation

A University of Michigan team has found a way -- using precisely patterned activation of coils -- to produce transcranial magnetic stimulation that penetrates deeper than ever. The new headpiece produces fields that extend 2.4 centimeters into the brain for treatment of depression and other diseases, exceeding the previously achievable depth limit of 2 centimeters.
