N.J. middle-schoolers learn about veterans, raise money for groups

More than 300 people, including students, ran the 1-mile race during the 14th annual Run for Vets event at Christa McAuliffe Middle School in Jackson, N.J., raising nearly $3,500 for veterans' groups. Students also heard from a group of veterans who served in wars -- including World War II, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan -- and presented projects about service members. "The students really start to understand the sacrifices these people are willing to make for us to live in this place we call home," said seventh-grade literacy teacher Jackie Hearon, who helped organize the event.
