Primary care physicians offer stress management services

Some primary care physicians in the Boston area are offering patients stress management services as more insurers cover acupuncture, massage and meditation done under physician supervision. Russell Phillips of Harvard Medical School's Center for Primary Care says 19 primary care practices in Massachusetts teaching hospitals are working on team-based approaches to providing mental health counseling. "Many physicians don't feel prepared to teach stress management techniques, and it raises the question as to whether it's something that a doctor does or perhaps that a health coach should do," Phillips said.
