What makes an ideal green roof?

A team from Portland State University's Green Building Research Laboratory in Oregon is working with a Wal-Mart store to design the ideal green roof. Three separate green roofs will top the building and cover 40,000 square feet; the remaining 52,000 square feet will be covered with a white membrane. Researchers are installing sensors and a weather station to monitor progress on issues including solar-energy generation, stormwater filtration, habitat, energy efficiency and mitigation of heat islands.
