EU investigates Apple, Samsung over patent lawsuits

The European Commission wants to know whether Apple and Samsung Electronics violated antitrust rules as they sued and countersued each other over their cellphone patents. The EU's regulatory body has asked the companies for documents related to enforcement of "standards-essential" patents, the commission said Friday. These are patents that companies need to conform to industry standards -- Wi-Fi or 3G, for example -- and smartphone makers are prohibited from suing or asking for extraordinarily high license fees over their use.
