Industry says tougher vehicle-emission rules would hurt refiners

The oil and natural gas industry dismissed the need for the Environmental Protection Agency's proposed rules to significantly decrease sulfur levels in gasoline, saying it would force refiners to carry out major plant modifications while limiting processing capacity. "There have been advancements in vehicle-catalyst technology and computer-control technology that should enable significant, cost-effective reductions in motor-vehicle tailpipe emissions," said EPA official Margo T. Oge.
