Palliative care is an option for patients of any age and at any stage of a serious illness, and it can be integrated with curative therapies, because its goal is to improve quality of life, says Dr. Thomas Smith, director of palliative medicine at Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center. Studies show palliative care helps patients live longer and better lives, he says, and as the specialty has been accepted within the medical field, it has standardized its care by consensus.
