FDA regulations aimed at pet food manufacturing practices

Amid an FDA investigation into pet illnesses and deaths associated with treats made in China, U.S. regulators have moved on to efforts to make pet food as safe as possible with new standards for manufacturers. The Current Good Manufacturing Practices rule for pet food, published Oct. 29 and open for comment, sets standards for domestic and foreign manufacturers of companion animal food as well as livestock feed. Farms that produce their own food for their livestock and storage of raw commodities used in food production would be exempt.
