States prioritize local control in move to the common core

The Common Core State Standards have become politically divisive in some parts of the country, even as schools are working to implement the standards. States such as Alabama, Florida, Louisiana and Michigan now are working to ease fears about a potential federal and state intrusion into education -- in part by going back to policies prioritizing local control of students' data, school curricula and teaching materials.
