Dogs and cats get diabetes, although it manifests differently in each species, and the condition is more treatable than owners may realize. Insulin administration and dietary changes are part of the management of the disease. Treatment helps animals live a good-quality life and helps avoid some complications of diabetes including cataracts in dogs, hind limb weakness in cats and ketoacidosis -- a life-threatening condition -- in both dogs and cats.
