FDA approves heart pump as transplant replacement

A battery-powered heart pump used by heart patients waiting for a transplant was approved yesterday as a permanent replacement for end-stage congestive heart failure patients. The pump can be used by those who are too ill to undergo a transplant and who are expected to die within two years.
