In preliminary vote, state board approves biology books

Refusing to make content changes advocated by religious conservatives, the Texas State Board of Education voted 11-4 to adopt new high school biology textbooks that fully discuss evolution. Many educators and scientists had been concerned that revising the books would have permitted the teaching of creationism in science classes.
