FDA to rule on cancer-fighting claims for tomato products

The Food and Drug Administration, after several delays, plans this week to decide if companies can advertise their tomato-based products as helping to prevent cancer. The issue involves lycopene, the chemical that gives tomatoes their red color. The FDA said it has lacked the resources to deal with applications regarding the health claims, but it hopes to issue a ruling by Friday.
