Director says Coke, Mercedes opted out of edgy film scenes

Neither Coca-Cola nor Mercedes-Benz gave permission for their brands' inclusion in Fox Searchlight's gritty, Mumbai, India-set release, "Slumdog Millionaire." The brands asked for their images to be excised from key scenes of the film, according to director Danny Boyle. However, a Coca-Cola spokeswoman said the company had no record of the studio requesting permission to use the cola's trademark in the movie, and Mercedes declined to comment, also claiming not to be familiar with a request by the studio to use its trademark and logo.
