North Carolina utility seeks easements for Blue Ridge power line

A 10-mile 115-kilovolt line across the Blue Ridge Parkway in Asheville, N.C., will require Progress Energy to procure private land as it works to meet federal standards put into place after the 2003 Northeast blackout. The $25 million project includes an upgrade to an existing line, boosting it from 115 to 230 kilovolts. The new line will be supported by 80-foot to 110-foot steel structures placed about 500 feet to 700 feet apart.
