When Joe Chavez took over the reins at Southern Folger Detention Equipment Co.'s manufacturing facilities, he knew that the company's workers were the key to implementing a successful lean-manufacturing strategy. Chavez put up "report-on boards" on every shop floor where workers could write up issues that needed management or repair-crew attention, record key data, or suggest new areas for efficiency savings. "Their involvement has benefited all of us in more ways than I thought possible," Chavez says. ""Ultimately, these are the kinds of things that improve management performance, too."
