Companies should keep their manufacturing bases in the U.S. for the good of the country -- but also because doing so can help them gain a competitive edge, says Intel co-founder and former CEO Andy Grove. Intel's U.S. chip-fabricating operations allowed it to tap into the skills and discipline of the U.S. workforce, Grove says, giving the company an edge over companies that outsourced their manufacturing. "That was not a result of us wanting to be patriotic. Operationally, that was the most logical thing for us to do," he explains.
