Following GM's collapse last year, the company shuttered 15 manufacturing plants and transferred them to Motors Liquidation Co. -- aka "Old GM" -- for resale. Now the plants have been gutted and their machinery is being auctioned off, leaving engineers and plant managers scrambling to pick up everything from blocks of granite to gym equipment at fire-sale prices. "This is just flat-out heartbreaking," says a GM plant engineer surveying one stripped-bare facility. "There's no other word for it."
