Chinese researchers tout polymer-based structural-stress sensors

Chinese scientists have developed polymer-based nanofiber sensors that can monitor building safety and the structural integrity of motor vehicles and planes. The nanofibers conduct various electricity strengths, proportionate to the amount of stress placed on the structure it measures. "During stress, the films elongate and the fibers straighten, so electrical contact between fibers becomes less effective. As a result, the resistance between the electrodes increases," said Stephan Kirchmeyer of Heraeus Precious Metals in Germany.
