Tall buildings pose challenges for engineers

Designing tall structures is a challenge for structural engineers, says Kate Ascher, author of the book, "The Heights, Anatomy of a Skyscraper." They need to take into account wind currents, seismic activity, natural disasters, indoor air quality, water pressure and more, she says. Technology and techniques are applied to make the skyscrapers work, some of which she explains in this excerpt of her book.
