Online spending and in-store "showrooming" are on the rise

Online retail spending scored its 12th consecutive quarter of year-over-year growth in the third quarter, increasing to $41.9 billion, a gain of 15% over 2011, per comScore. The same survey revealed that almost 4 in 10 consumers participated in so-called "showrooming" -- browsing at a bricks-and-mortar store with a smartphone, only to buy online -- a trend that is also on the rise.
